From tbrown@jakarta.jpl.nasa.gov Fri Aug 10 13:29 MST 2001 Date: Fri, 10 Aug 2001 13:39:24 -0700 (PDT) From: Tyler L Brown To: neese@psi.edu Subject: Review of NEAR MSI EDR Volumes Content-Type: text Content-Length: 7988 To: Carol Neese From: Tyler Brown Date: 2001 August 9 Subject: Review of NEAR MSI EDR Volumes CC: C.Neese E.Grayzeck V.Henderson J.Wilf M.A'Hearn E.Dobinson R.Joyner S.Hughes M.Martin C.Hall-Atkinson A.Raugh ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This constitutes a review of volume images downloaded from the UMD jukebox August 8-10. The volumes selected are NIEROS_2001, NIEROS_2218, NIEROS_2325 & NIEROS_4001. The problems noted are small, for the most part. The largest impact noted would be the rewriting and/or restructuring of certain catalog files. Spelling & other proofreading errors in certain files are of less concern, and may be negotiable. The comments directly below pertain to NIEROS_2001. The other volumes are critiqued in later sections, and will be treated as incremental reviews, with differences from NIEROS_2001 being noted. NIEROS_2001 =========== Root Directory -------------- voldesc.cat: - VOLUME_SET_NAME = "NEAR: MULTI-SPECTRAL IMAGER" This is just a description of the instrument. Let's try to find a more descriptive name for the volume, like, say "NEAR: MULTI-SPECTRAL IMAGER EROS EDR DATA", or some such... Calibration Directory --------------------- coverflatratio*.lbl files: - For INSTRUMENT_HOST_NAME = "Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous", change to uppercase. f*_512psf_v2.lbl files: - For INSTRUMENT_HOST_NAME = "Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous", change to uppercase. msibandpass/band*.lbl files: - For INSTRUMENT_HOST_NAME = "Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous", change to uppercase. - For INSTRUMENT_NAME = "Multi-spectral Imager", change to uppercase. flat*.lbl files: - For INSTRUMENT_HOST_NAME = "Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous", change to uppercase. calinfo.txt: - The word ineterior is misspelled on line 45 - The word inetgrating is misspelled on line 46 - The word identfication is misspelled on line 56 Catalog Directory ----------------- mission.cat: - The word missionon is misspelled on line 27 - The word maintaing is misspelled on line 176 - The word Ephemeredes is misspelled on line 588 msifilds.cat: - DATA_SET_NAME = "NEAR MULTISPECTRAL IMAGER V1.0" This doesn't really sound like a data set name. Can we be a bit more descriptive? - This data set cat file seems a bit on the thin side. Is this enough description? - In fact, is a list of bandpasses a good subject for a data set? msil2ds.cat: - There is a lot of information in this data set cat file, but the structure is a bit problematic. It seems to be set up more like a voldesc.cat file. Also, there are problems with indentation, capitalization and other structural nitpicks. Some cleanup may be in order. One thing that definitely needs fixing is that all keywords need to be in all-caps. - Detail: The word proceudre is misspelled on lines 44 94 107 person.cat: - The word SHeridan is misspelled on line 399 Document Directory ------------------ mission.lbl: - The word successfuly is misspelled on line 16 msical.txt: - The word exposuer is misspelled on line 62 - The word electons is misspelled on line 100 - The word attentuation is misspelled on line 227 - The word fitler is misspelled on line 228 - The word subvtraction is misspelled on line 353 observation_log/eros_obsv_guide.lbl & pre_eros_obsv_guide.lbl: - DOCUMENT_FORMAT = MICROSOFT_EXCEL We would like to keep Bill Gates out of this, but we do actually have a precedent ("MICROSOFT WORD"). It is to be noted, however, that the start and stop times in the msil2ds.cat data set catalog are different. It is presumed that this reflects a simple bookkeeping error, and not a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of catalog files, and is readily remedied by changing the start and stop times to span the entire length of the data set, and not merely the fragment of the data set residing on the local volume. Data Directories ---------------- There are anumber of keywords that are not currently in the data dictionary. Some are merely backlogged, and others are still under consideration: COMMANDED_FILTER_NUMBER PIXEL_GEOMETRY_CORRECTION_FLAG EMECL_SC_QUATERNION SUN_SC_POSITION_VECTOR PIXEL_SATURATION_VALUE SATURATED_PIXELS At this time, it is advantageous to assume that all these values will be approved for addition to the data dictionary. - For INSTRUMENT_HOST_NAME = "Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous", change to uppercase. For reasons of space, I was able only to check a fraction of the data files, but found the following occasional errors. The following keywords have the indicated ranges: CENTER_LATITUDE -90. to 90. CENTER_LONGITUDE -180. to 360. INCIDENCE_ANGLE 0. to 180. EMISSION_ANGLE 0. to 180. PHASE_ANGLE 0. to 180. SLANT_DISTANCE not specified, but should be >= 0. Of the label files I perused, the following had values for the above outside these ranges, i.e. -1.0E32: data/2000/290/iof/m0147145067f4_2p_iof.lbl data/2000/290/iof/m0147145315f4_2p_iof.lbl data/2000/290/iof/m0147145846f4_2p_iof.lbl data/2000/290/iof/m0147145908f4_2p_iof.lbl data/2000/290/iof/m0147146094f4_2p_iof.lbl data/2000/290/iof/m0147146156f4_2p_iof.lbl data/2000/290/iofdbl/m0147145067f4_2p_iof_dbl.lbl data/2000/290/iofdbl/m0147145315f4_2p_iof_dbl.lbl data/2000/290/iofdbl/m0147145846f4_2p_iof_dbl.lbl data/2000/290/iofdbl/m0147145908f4_2p_iof_dbl.lbl data/2000/290/iofdbl/m0147146094f4_2p_iof_dbl.lbl data/2000/290/iofdbl/m0147146156f4_2p_iof_dbl.lbl It is presumed that there are many other instances of this on other labels. This is a unique product, and should engender some discussion at the review. NIMATH_ & NIMATH_ ================= I don't have time to look at these volumes. I can only hope the problems are of a similar nature.
