Notes from PDS NEAR higher level review meeting. August 16, 2001. XGRS ==== Bill Feldman leads the review. He was not able to read any of the data files. He requests that some tools be provided to help users browse the data. Browse file was extremely useful. Helpful to collapse spectra side by side; not a lien. Suggested Lien. Science questions sent around. Change format of data from counts fct of channel vs file number to counts/second In daily file, level 2, change channel # to counts/time. Elemental abundance very sensitive function of solar spectrum; difficult to do what Bill wants; to give counts as a fct of solar fluence. Jack: Will be giving models they use- to PDS? Bill: Dataset not ready for level 2 due to geometry model (solar monitor pointing not what the team expected). Suggestions. Bill: Premature to archive the XRS data. Need laboratory data, and to go from counts per channel per file # to science units. For X-ray flares, find comparable # when NOT looking at the asteroid. Needed to get background flux of charged particles. Feldman detailed notes: (get copy). * Disk 20012; starting date later than ending date. * Anamoly file.(see observation log). * Calibration to support their best elemental abundance estimate. * Team best estimate of elemental abundances (level 3 data). LIEN. Provide data on Laboratory calibration data and conversion factors from instrument response to science units. Ground conversion system at UA did not fill in critical information needs to rerun data. Conversion from count rates to photon to elemental comp as a fct of temperature. Add this info as a document file. Level 2 data in physical units, not channel # counts. Jake argues that it is difficult process. What is difference between level 1 and level 2 - only addtitional geometric info. Have data when instrument was not looking at the asteroid. Difference between Level 1 and Level 2 is only amount of geometry and engineering detail. GRS Data. Clerical lien. Take out asteroid pointing ? LIEN. Calibration Data Missing. They will supply data tables that were used in publications describing the calibration process. * SBN needed to make sure that all surface GRS data is available before sending to Bill for review; this process is ready to go forward now. Get proxy for galactic cosmic ray flux. Lien: XRS. Physical units: Counts per channel # will go to Energy in each channel (kev) counts per channel delta, and conversion table to go from Supply data E = C*m + b. Team will supply decsription of the algorithm to go from counts per channel to scientific units. Tables as a fct of temperature. Extra file should document the subtleties of the data reduction process. GRS. Calibration data for several elements; Evans MAPs paper. Tables, figs plus text. Counts/Cosmic Ray Proxy/delta E. Summary. PDS will accept the level 2 submission when the above liens are satisfied regarding describing the calibration procedures to go from counts per channel to physical units. Level 3. Team will supply their best estimate, including systematic errors, of the elemental abundances with both variance and systematic errors. For both XRS and surface data. On surface data to PDS by Aug 24, gto Bill by Sept 1, review finished by Sept 15, to Howie for final with only 2 weeks to finalize everything. FINAL LIEN. * Accept the level 1b data as submitted. * Accept the level 2 submission subject to submission of documentation of procedures for going from instrument units (counts per channel) to physical units. This will be included as a document file. Specifically this includes data from Starr, XRS calib paper for Figs 1-10, not Fig 11, Fig 12, Fig 13(maybe more current version; Tim to ask Jack. not Fig 14. These are subject to availability. GRS. Paper not here; Tim/Ed to agree on this list of figs. Level 3:
