COMET2_ROT ---------- D. Scheeres (D. Britt did not dial into the telecon) General -------- - There are some formatting issues that need to be resolved before this data set is ingested. See liens below. dataset.cat ----------- - Is this a stand-alone data set or will it be expanded with new data in the future? Per M. A'Hearn, new results will be incorporated. Note this in dataset.cat rotation.tab/lbl ---------------- Cols 2-3: - Specify the presence of the "/" in the table format? No, this is the format used for comet names in PDS. Do not make any changes. Col 5: - Include "Excited (SAM)" as a possible, future entry. SAM is an acronym for short axis mode. - Consider separating this column into two: The first should describe the spin state (Excited, UNK), and the second should describe the mode (LAM for long axis mode, SAM for short axis mode, or UNK for if the mode is not known). - Change "?" values to "UNK" and add the appropriate keyword in the label. - Define the value "Excited?" in the label. Assuming this column is split into two, the new values should be Excited and UNK. - Correct "Exicted" entry. Col 6: - Delete the words "of precession" from the description. Col 7: - Provide a better definition for "?". This actually indicates the quality, so consider adding a separate column to capture this parameter. - Which of the various definitions of "synodic" is used? Tony should be be able to clarify this issue. Col 8: - Use a consistent number of significant digits, relative to Col 6, which is F6.4? No, do not change now. - Identify unknown constant of -.99 in the column description. Col 9: - Define "?" entry in the label. Does it indicate an unknown value? - Consider splitting this column into two, the second being a quality flag. Col 10, 13, 14, 1, 17: - All of these angles are specified as integers. Should allow for decimal digits. - Data type should be real, not integer. - Consider using a consistent number of significant digits for all values. - Use a value such as -99.99, not 0, for missing constants. Col 10: - Change missing constant value to -9. Do not use 0. - Modify definition to state this is an "average" angle. Col 11: - Provide a better definition. Tony will write it. Col 15: - Break into two columns. The first column should indicate if the angular momentum vector value is known (Y/N). The second should indicate if the sense of pointing of this vector is known (Y/N). Col 18: - Use the full Julian date. Remove "modified" from the description. ______________________________________________________________________________ ______________________________________________________________________________ Dan Scheeres' List of Recommended Changes ----------------------------------------- The following is a text version of Dan's presentation. It is included here as a reference to the liens provided above. Review: The data will be useful and appears to be correctly transcribed from the article. There are several format issues that must be addressed, however, before the data should be accepted. None of these issues are major, I believe, but will involve some hand-editing of the format. Question: Is the intent of this database to start a new compilation of comet rotation states that will be expanded with new data? Column 2-3: Comet Type and Name - Specify the presence of the Ò/Ó in the table format. Usual part of a cometÕs name. Column 5: Spin Mode - Current defined entries are ÒUnexcitedÓ and ÒExcited (LAM)Ó - Define ÒBlankÓ entry as Ò?Ó - Define ÒExcited?Ó entry - Should a separate column for the ÒLAMÓ or ÒSAMÓ rotation state be added? Additional data in the future may provide more diversity than here currently. Column 7: P_phi Flag - Current defined entries are ÒSÓ for sidereal and Ò-Ó for synodic - Better definition of the Ò?Ó entry needed. Is it a ÒblankÓ symbol? Column 8: P_Psi - Should give consistent number of significant digits, relative to Column 6, which is F6.4 - Should use consistent ÒblankÓ symbol with Column 6, current is Ò-.99Ó. Column 9: P_Psi Flag - Define the Ò?Ó entry, it is currently undefined. Columns 10, 13, 14, 16, 17: - All these columns define angles, and are currently specified as integers with missing constant values of Ò0Ó - Data type should all be real, no integers. - A consistent number of significant digits in the format needed - A consistent missing constant designator should be used, such as Ò-99.99Ó. Column 10: Theta angle - This angle actually will librate between limits, definition should note that this is an ÒaverageÓ or ÒapproximateÓ angle Column 15: M_Flag: defines if sense of rotation is known - Since the nominal entry is a ÒblankÓ, would recommend using a true blank for this. - Perhaps use a more definite symbol/word than Ò?Ó to indicate if the sense of notation is unknown
