February 2020 New Horizons Review ================================= PEPSSI KEM1 v2.0 Liens ====================== Reviewers: Steve Joy, Rudy Frahm ================================ file: dataset.cat --> Update text to include leapsecond at the end of December 2017. Review all New Horizons trajectory information to determine the influence and if reprocessing trajectory information is necessary. file: calinfo.txt (-2- and -3-) --> "rateboxdefinitionplanes.lit" -> "rateboxdefinitionplanes.lbl" file: pep_bti.tab/.lbl --> File is probably complete, but last entry is 2019-01-12, which is prior to the end date for this delivery. Check to make sure no entries are missing. file: nk_kem.cat --> voldesc.cat gives an end date for this mission phase as 2019-01-30T00:08:02.176. This end date was just over a year ago. Yet nh_kem.cat do not yet show an end date ("TBD"). In addition, the PEPSSI data do not exceed the date given in voldesc.cat. However, 2021-09-30 is the MISSION_STOP_DATE for the mission given in thsi file. Please correct these inconsistencies. file: nhsc.cat --> This document needs to be updated. There are references to measurements at Pluto in numerous places but. The instrument description gives no confidence that the New Horizons instruments can measure properties of a KBO. file: pepssi.cat --> Scientific objectives only discuss Pluto and not the KEM mission. Please update with science objectives beyond Pluto. --> The phrase, "Molecular ions, expected from Pluto's atmosphere..." should be rephrased, because PEPSSI will detect them regardless of their source. Pluto can be used as an example. --> "The PEPSSI Rate Box tables were changed on day 144 and calibration and analysis of this period is still preliminary." Suggest removing this sentence since the probability of accomplishment is low. file: rateboxdefinitionplanes.lbl --> This file only mentions Rate Box definitions through the Jupiter mission phase and into the Pluto Cruise mission phase. What about the KBO phase? pepssi.cat mentions the slight software was updated on November 29, 2016. Does this change the rate box definitions? The last update indicated in this file is Set 2, valid after May 24, 2007. file: soc_inst_icd.pdf --> Also only mentions scientific goals involving Pluto. DATA --> There is a drop in the continuity begining late in 2018 in all selected sectors/anodes--these are likely data gaps, not poor observing geometry giving zero counts. FLUXN1B Events "C" Rates --> What is B09SMOOTH? Unable to locate any documentation citing this quantity. Strong Recommendation (not a lien): Add a little more detail to the "Version" section of the dataset.cat files that explains what data were acquired in the KEM1 phase that were not returned in time to be included in this version of the dataset. A lot of the data from Oct or Nov 2018 to the end of Jan 2019 are missing. It's not clear how much of this data was acquired but not downlinked in time versus data that were acquired in an unusable geometry. Somewhere in the documentation (nh_kem.cat, maybe elsewhere) the details of the timing and geometry of closest approach should be defined (user shouldn't have to go to Google). Similarly, there should be some mention of "common names" including Ultima Thule and Arrokoth. Certification: Certified w/ liens
